Kanto Part 7: The End?

With 7 badges down, we head on to our final gym challenge...will this be the end or will we live to fight another day?

Back at Viridian City, we make our way into the gym. We clear out the trainers here, run back to heal, and head straight for Giovanni

Viridian City Showdown

After the battle with Blaine, I didn't think we would have a quicker battle...but boy was I wrong. Spears easily took care of both Giovanni's Rhyhorns, Snorlax handled Dugtrio, and Blastoise elimnated the King and Queen to earn our final badge. The battle was not very eventful as it only lasted 6 turns. 

We made our way to Route 22 where Kris wanted to battle one last time before our final challenge.

Rival Battle #6

As usual, Kris led with his Pidgeot. I let Migos take care of him and he did not disappoint. The first 2 rock slides flinched Pidgeot and he was knocked out on the third. Kris then sent out Venusaur, which I figured would give a lot of problems to my team, so I went Meatloaf. This was a long drawn out battle thanks to synthesis and Venusaur being fully paralyzed from body slam. Eventually, Meatloaf was able to knock out Venusaur. Rhyhorn was no match for Spears and next up was Alakazam. The sole purpose of having Meatloaf on the team was specifically for Zam. Kris went right for the throat with a calm mind, however the rest of the battle consisted of absolutely nothing. The turns are as follows

Luckily, the rest of the battle went smoothly as Migos took care of Growlithe and Skrillex ko'd Gyarados.

It was finally time for the last stretch...Victory Road. We lost our encounter as Geodude would rather commit suicide, than join our team. The trainers here were good levels, but halfway through....White found itself getting critted by a flamethrower from Dawson's Charmeleon.

I decided to pick up Jagger the Aerodactyl from the box and train him up as much as I could before the Elite Four. If all else failed, at least I had some death fodder in case I needed to sac something off. (The image at the end was the squad after Giovanni.)

Kanto Part 6: Flooding the Gym

With 2 badges in hand, we make our way towards the 7th gym on Cinnabar Island. First, we stop on Route 21 to pick up a new encounter.

I focused on training Skrillex here because I knew he wouldn't get many opportunities in Victory Road for grinding. Skrillex grew from level 39 to 41 on this route and we arrived on the island.

After a quick heal, we headed towards the Pokemon Lab to revive one of our two fossils. I chose not to revive Lord Helix because I already had LLCoolJ and felt Aerodactyl would be a better fit with the team if I needed to replace someone.

Next, we headed to the Pokemon Mansion where we failed our encounter and quickly ran to the basement and picked up the key. I avoided many of the trainers in this area because I wanted to use this area for grinding later.

Cinnabar Island Showdown

I did choose to fight all the trainers in Blaine's gym to get a few extra levels on LL before he faced off against Blaine. This battle was one of the least stressful gym battles I had. I decided the best play was to solo his team with LL. It only took him 6 surfs and 1 hyper potion to run through Blaine's team.

After the battle, Bill needed some help on the Sevii Islands. We decided to join him, mostly because we couldn't progress if we didn't. This part of the game was kind of pointless, just allowed me to get a few encounters and do a bit of training.

Kanto Part 5: The Grind

We continue our journey with a few goals in mind: get as many encounters as I can, grind as much as possible, and take on Koga and Sabrina. Side note, I messed up the image at the end, but all the encounters listed in this section are correct. It just has some spoilers for the coming posts.

We revisited Route 8 to start off our grinding nothing too crazy happening here. Skrillex grew to level 29 and LL grew to level 27. After our first battle on Route 10, Skrillex leveled up to 30 and learned bite. I also happened to use my thunderstone:

I taught him double kick and shock wave here as well. Route 10 was a quick trip (Spears grew to level 28) and we moved back to Celadon to see what Team Rocket was up to. Again, nothing too crazy here, but we did get to meet the leader of Team Rocket who gave us the Silph Scope. We made our way to the Pokemon Tower to see if we could find Mr. Fuji who apparently had gone missing. Our trip was immediately interrupted by Kris who was itching to pick a fight. 

Rival Battle #4

This was a very short battle. Kris once again led Pidgeotto who was easily ko'd by Skrillex. He then thought his Gyarados would be able to get rid of Skrillex, but he was easily mistaken. LL handled his Growlithe and Kadabra, while Birdman took care of Ivysaur. After Kris left in shame, we continued up the tower only to be stopped again, but this time by a new friend.

We ran through the rest of the tower and saved Mr. Fuji who gave us the Poke Flute so we could now wake up Snorlax. We ended up critting the one on Route 12, however the one on Route 16 was more willing to join us.

Everything was going smoothly and the team was shaping up nicely. I knew the bikers on Cycling Road would be an issue because of explosions and I didn't have the best things to deal with poison types. One of the bikers named Hideo decided to test my skill. He led with Weezing and I led Birdman who hit him with a fly doing almost 50%. Weezing returned the favor by poisoning Birdman. We decided to fly again, taking 12 damage from poison. This time, Birdman hits Weezing for just under 50% and it lived on 1 HP. Weezing lands a crit sludge dropping Birdman's HP to 12....which was unfortunate as I watched her slowly die to poison. This death hit the team hard as it was just bad luck, but we had all grown extremely attached to Birdman.

With the loss of a friend, we carefully laid her to rest and decided to add Meatloaf to the team for some extra bulk. We finished the Cycling Road and headed back into Saffron City. We cleared out all of the Silph Co., gained a little gift, and battled Kris once again.

Rival Battle #5

Again Kris' battle was underwhelming as it was almost a repeat of before. Skrillex took care of Pidgeot and Gyarados with 2 shock waves, LL surfed all over Growlithe, and Meatloaf put in the finest of work against Venusaur and Alakazam.

We finished up here and made our way to the dojo for a few more levels before taking on Sabrina. I chose to battle Sabrina first since I was already in Saffron.

Saffron City Showdown

Sabrina's gym was a scary place for me so I avoided all the trainers and headed straight for her. Apparently her goal was to set up on me and my goal was for Meatloaf to flatten everything she had. She led Kadabra and immediately went for a calm mind as Meatloaf finished it with a body slam. Mr. Mime was the exact same play. Next was Venomoth. She used psybeam as Meatloaf went for a body slam. Next she healed and Mealoaf attacked with return. The third psybeam was able to confuse Meatloaf who hurt herself. I decided to use a full restore because I wasn't going to be playing that game. Venomoth went for a gust and Meatloaf ko'd with a body slam. Her Alakazam was another repeat of the start of the battle. However, Zam lived the first body slam so Sabrina healed, but it wasn't able to live the second.

With another badge earned, we headed right for Koga. 

Fuchsia City Showdown

Koga wasn't a huge problem for the team. White handled the first Koffing with a couple strengths, Migos ko'd Muk with a magnitude 7, LL surfed the second Koffing, and Meatloaf finished the battle with a huge body slam on the Weezing. She was able to paralyze Weezing on the first body slam and Koga used a full heal on the second.

Kanto Part 4: THIS GYM IS GREAT!

(I wanted to preface this part: this section of the game is extremely short and repetitive. So in order to not make a drawn out post, I will just post the highlights of my grinding, encounters, and then head into the gym battle. This short post should make up for the next couple which should have a little more content. So without further ado, please enjoy.)

3 down, 5 to go I thought to myself as I exited the gym. Before making our way to Rock Tunnel, I felt it would be best to do a little exploring. I make a quick cut through Diglett's Tunnel to Route 2 to pick up flash, although I'm never going to use it, and then head to Pewter to get the Old Amber. With new items in hand, we continue on our journey.

Route 9 was just a grinding spot as Birdman, White, LL, and Spears all grew to level 24. We failed our encounter after 3 encounters, but were fortunate to get our Route 10 encounter...

Rock Tunnel had no luck for us in the way of an encounter as well. We made the trek through the dark cave battling all the trainers to grab a few extra levels. Migos learned rock slide thanks to some dude lurking in the darkness.

We exit the cave, avoid the trainers, and make our way to Lavender Town. After a quick heal, we skip over to Route 8 for one battle and an encounter.

Once again, we dodge all the other trainers for now and head to Celadon City. Along the way, we fail another encounter on Route 7. 

We have a couple of things to do here before we challenge Erika. First, I make my way over to the Department store to buy a leaf stone, thunder stone, some fresh water, and to trade the drinks for TMs. Next, we make our way to the restaurant to pick up the coin case to feed my gambling addiction, which isn't a problem in this game...voltorb flip is a different thing, but we will talk about it when we get there, and make our way to the game corner. I see some shady dude lurking in the back and of course he wants to battle. White takes care of his Raticate and grows to level 25 and Migos handles Zubat. I then head to the prize area and debate on whether I want Dratini, Porygon, or if I want to go and get the Eevee. Ultimately, I decide to get Eevee after I had tea with a lady that reminded me of my grandma. After getting Eevee, I decided to hold off on using my thunder stone until later. However, Spears appreciated my purchasing of a leaf stone.

At this point there is nothing left to do other than to head to the gym. As I approached the gym, I see an elderly gentleman climbing on top of a ladder. I wonder if the gym is closed since he is working on repairing the roof I think just as I reach the doors. "HEHEHE! THIS GYM IS GREAT! IT'S FULL OF WOMEN!" he shouts at me as I walk into the gym. "Perv" I say as I shake my head at the old man. He isn't wrong though...I use the lasses, beautys, cooltrainers, and picknickers in this gym to get some levels for my newly acquired Skrillex. After one last heal, it is time for Erika. Before I start, I turn around and see the old man still in the window, but this time he is giving me a thumbs up and making other gestures at me that an elderly person probably shouldn't be doing. Erika seems to have just woken from a nap, and who would blame her in this gym.

Celadon City Showdown

My game plan is very simple for her: let Birdman take care of business. Erika leads Victreebel and I led Birdman. Birdman hits 3 aerial aces and takes no damage. Victreebel missed a stun spore and then had to be healed. For her next Pokemon, Tangela, I decide to give Birdman a break and send out Spears. She lands 3 acids to knock Tangela out. Erika's final Pokemon was a Vileplume of her own and I send Birdman back out. Birdman connects an aerial ace as she gets paralyzed by Vileplume. Vileplume then gets a defence drop off of acid, but it doesn't matter to Birdman as she ko's Vileplume in return. 

Our journey has reached the halfway point. I wonder what else is in store for us.

Kanto Part 3: Smooth Sailing

Continuing on after our victory over Misty, we make our way back through the underground path to Route 6. This is a perfect opportunity for some grinding. Have to make sure we are ready for Surge since I don't have the best matchup. The trainers here are pretty weak and we move through them quickly. Birdman was my main focus as she grew to level 19 and learned pursuit. After exploring Vermilion City and seeing all it has to offer, I decided it was time to look past my fear of drowning and visit the S.S. Anne.

My plan here was to switch train Migos to get ready for Surge. I guess my levels weren't that good as I found myself constantly running back to heal. We made our way through the bottom part of the ship and the main floor. I decided next to make my way to the kitchen only to find that the chefs were throwing out perfectly good berries, at least I hoped they were fresh! Before anyone could see, I picked them out of the trash, mmm, and stuffed them in my bag. The rest of the trainers on the boat were no problem for our team.

I heard there was a cut master on board the ship so I wet to seek out his guidance. As I approached the captain's quarters, who should I run into other than Kris.

Rival Battle #3

It was a battle of the birds as Kris led Pidgeotto and I led Birdman. Birdman leered him twice and finished him with a crit peck. Next, Kris went into his Raticate and I into LL. Raticate missed his first hyper fang as I water pulsed him. Then knocked him out on the next turn with water pulse as LL grew to level 22. Krist sends out Ivysaur and I swap back into Birdman who hits Ivysaur with a peck as it puts me to sleep. I use my second turn to heal and Ivysaur whips it's vines. Birdman sleeps for one turn then knockout Ivysaur with another peck. For his last Pokemon, Kadabra, I swap back into LL. Apparently his Kadabra hasn't gotten any better as it uses its two turns to click disable. LL knocks it out after a bite and water pulse. With that annoyance out of the way, we continue to climb the stairs to see the captain. "Will you rub my back please? I'm a little seasick," the captain says to me. Why captain a boat if you get seasick I think to myself as I oblige the man's odd request. He thanks me and gives me cut. The boat sails away and I head back to the Poke Center.

I contemplate heading right to the gym, but I need something other than Migos to help with Surge. I had taken White out of the box to replace TLC, RIP, but I had no intentions of using him until I remember he could learn dig. I teach him dig and make my way to route 11 to train him up. White was only level 14 and the rest of my team was nearing the level cap so I had to be careful about which Pokemon I used. I quickly moved through the trainers until White was level 19, which also happened to be after I beat the last trainer. I fed him 3 pieces of candy and watched as my team was now ready.

Vermilion City Showdown

My plan here was to use White against Voltorb and Migos against Pikachu and Raichu. White used dig turn 1 and Voltorb missed its shock wave while White was underground. White hit it hard with dig and Voltorb missed a sonic boom. Surge thought it was a good idea to heal as White bit back. White finished the battle off with a dig. Surge then went into Pikachu who Migos handled easily with a magnitude 10. Raichu wasn't as annoying as it could have been with double team. Raichu began the battle with quick attack as Migos hit back with a magnitude 7. Raichu used double team on the second turn, but Migos broke through with another magnitude 7 to earn us our third badge!

Kanto Part 2: Drowning in Water

I quickly grab my Boulder Badge from Brock and the newly acquired Rock Tomb and storm out of the gym. After a quick heal, it is time to take on the glorious Mt. Moon. On my way, one of Oak's aides decides I'm not going fast enough and he gives me running shoes. "Here you go Michael. You just need to ---" I throw the shoes on and zoom away down Route 3 before he could finish. The trainers here are a nice way for the rest of the team to gain some levels as I smash bird after bird, bug after bug along the way. I'm finally able to get my first encounter on the route, secretly hoping for one of the Nidos or Mankey. My first encounter was a Pidgey so I look again, only to find another Pidgey. Last chance I thought to myself.

Not quite what I had in mind, but we'll roll with it. With that out of the way, I approached the giant cave that is Mt. Moon. I entered to get another new friend for the team, which you probably could guess who it is...

I decide to quickly get through Mt. Moon. I find the Zubats to be extremely annoying and not very good for leveling up. I've also had some bad luck in Mt. Moon on previous visits so I knew which areas I needed to be cautious. I have no problem on the main floor until I decide to take on some super nerd named Jovan. The worst thing for my team at this point was an electric type...luckily for me this nerd had 2. I decide to lead MELLO and try to put the Magnemite to sleep which luckily she lands the first one. I swap to TLC because she is my most expendable member. Thankfully, Magnemite decided it wanted to take a nice long nap and TLC came through with the knockout. His next Pokemon was Voltorb which led me to swap back to MELLO and try the same strategy. Unfortunately, I was not so lucky this time as MELLO missed 2 Sings. I decided to scrap that idea and just try to knock it out before any harm came to my team. MELLO's defense was lowered twice and Voltorb needed just two more hits, but MELLO wasn't able to finish the job. Voltorb decided now was the time to get a crit tackle. My heart stopped as I watched MELLO's HP rapidly drop all the way to 2. Not taking the risk to get the last hit, I swapped to TLC to finish the job. After the close call, I leave the cave to heal and then proceed the rest of the way. At the end, I decided to praise Lord Helix and take a fossil. I decided to teach Mega Punch and Mega Kick to MELLO and LL respectively and then get my encounter.

With the newly acquired Pokemon in hand, we finally arrived at Cerulean City and the home of the enchanting Misty. I make my way to the Poke Center for some R&R before getting some cash and kicking some butt. Kris decides he wants to show off his "strong" and "smart" Pokemon to me. He leads Pidgeotto and I counter with LL. After 1 quick attack, he pro plays me and hard swaps to Bulbasaur. TLC is my obvious answer and she has no problem taking Bulbasaur down. He decided to go back into Pidgeotto and I back into LL. After a drawn out battle thanks to the awesome move that is sand-attack, Pidgeotto falls. His last two Pokemon are no challenge for Birdman and we walk away 2-0 vs Kris. Not as strong or smart as lead on to believe.  Routes 24 and 25 were uneventful, just a great grinding spot and 2 new catches.

I help Bill out with his "problem" in exchange for a boat ticket, fear of drowning activated, and make my way back down to Cerulean. I wanted to go get a few more catches before taking on Misty to put a semi-solid team together. I head to Route 5 and have 0 luck after 3 attempts so I move on. Route 6 granted me an adorable little kitty.

I decide to swap White with Migos to get aquainted with the rest of my team and head over to the Cerulean City Gym.

Cerulean City Showdown

My strategy going into this battle was to use everyone except Spears, who evolved into Gloom prior to the battle, and LL against Staryu to save health. Misty led Staryu and I led TLC. TLC landed the first poison powder. After a series of water pulses from Staryu and confusions from TLC, we both healed. TLC hurt herself in confusion the turn after, got hit by a water pulse, and then couldn't take a crit water pulse and silently fell asleep in eternal slumber. Furious by the loss of a dear friend, Birdman was out for blood and decided to pop back. However it was TLC and the poison that ultimately bested Staryu, revenge from the grave is the best kind of revenge.

The battle with Starmie was less anticlimactic. Spears missed her first 2 sleep powders forcing me to burn a potion while continuing to take swifts. She landed the third and Starmie slept for 4 turns until its defeat. Our second badge was earned, but at the cost of a close friend.

Kanto Part 1: Crushing the Rock Master

Our journey began one day as I was cleaning out my closet. I noticed my old Gameboy Advanced SP sitting in a box with Fire Red already in the slot. It was as if fate had decided I should do a generations nuzlocke as I had just finished browsing r/nuzlocke, and seeing all these generations nuzlockes, and now I was being hit with this nostalgia trip. As is the motto of nuzlockes, you only live once...so I decided to go for it.

I was so excited to start my journey that I quickly leapt from my bed and rushed down the stairs. I ran past my mom and out the front door. Of course no one was out except for some dude wanting to talk to me about science, fyi I hate science, so I decide to ditch this town and make my way towards some excitement. As soon as I reach my freedom that is Route 1, Oak has to come around and be a buzzkill telling me "You need a Pokemon." and "It is dangerous to go alone." So I follow the old man back to his lab to get a Pokemon of my own. His grandson, Kris, isn't too happy that I get first choice. Sucks to suck I think to myself as I reach for the Pokeball containing the water type Pokemon, Squirtle.

Apparently since I got to choose first, Kris thinks it is alright to be a jerk and challenges me to a battle. LL is able to take out his Bulbasaur despite an early crit against him and having to burn my early potion. I do some quick grinding on the road to Viridian City, pick up another free potion, and LL learns his first STAB move.  After a quick heal at the Poke Center, I pay the mart a visit and see what I can get with all this money burning a hole in my pocket. "Hey you came from Pallet Town? Prof. Oak's parcel came in, will you take it to him?" the clerk shouts at me from across the counter. I grab Oak's package and make my way back home...guess my adventure can wait. Oak decides to reward me with a Pokedex and some Pokeballs which I gladly accept and head to Route 1.

After the getting the obvious early game Pokemon, I make my way to Route 22.

I make my way into Viridian Forest just to scout out the landscape and catch a new Pokemon.

Before making my way completely through Viridian Forest, I decide to let RatPack and Yardbirds take a nice rest in the PC and continue on with only 3. I hate bugs so I quickly go through the forest while training TLC and Birdman. Through some love and care, TLC evolves into Butterfree and we exit the forest. I quickly head to the center and heal, buy some potions, and advance towards the Pewter City Gym. This kid, Liam told me I was "lightyears from facing Brock", so I had LL blow bubbles in his face and move past him.

Pewter City Showdown

The battle with Brock began with Geodude and LL who quickly dispatched Geodude with a bubble. Brock then went to his reliable Onix who was no match for LL thanks to a crit bubble. LL gained two levels and we obtained our first badge!

Intro/Rules

Hello fellow Nuzlockers! My name is Thenatural1991! I've been doing various Nuzlocke challenges for the past 2.5 years. In 2018, I completed a Dice Challenge variant for each region successfully completing 5/7 regions. This year, I wanted to try something I've never done before...doing a Generations Nuzlocke and blogging about it. I decided I wanted to branch out in the ways of recording my nuzlockes and I figured that since I am a terrible artist, I would try to write about them.

Here are the rules for my Generations Nuzlocke:

I will be playing through the generations in the following order: Fire Red, Soul Silver, Diamond, White 2, Alpha Sapphire, X, Moon. All games will be played on cartridge so this order was the most logical for me.

1. Each Pokemon that faints is considered dead and must be permaboxed.
2. You can only catch the first Pokemon you encounter in an area.
3. All Pokemon must be nicknamed after musicians or musical groups.
4. No legendaries.
5. Dupes Clause- May re-encounter up to 3 times. If after 3 tris I still encounter a Pokemon I have already caught, I forfeit that encounter.
6. I cannot reuse Pokemon from a previous generation if I used it at any point on my team.
7. Starter is chosen from Trainer ID (1-3 grass, 4-6 fire, 7-9 water, 0 choice).
8. Offspring of surviving Elite 4 teams will be transferred up to the next game.
9. Level limit based on next gym leader's highest leveled Pokemon.
